Like many of our key questions, the answer to this one could change dramatically if Amazon decides to pick Detroit for the site of its second headquarters. Should it remain an airfield in hopes of generating more traffic, possibly by luring new scheduled airline service? Or should the vast property be converted into a site for residences, an industrial park or some other new use? Last spring, Mayor Mike Duggan's office commissioned a study of what to do with the airport. But for nearly 20 years now, the airport on the east side has been dramatically underused, hosting just a few thousand takeoffs and landings of private aircraft per year. Young international Airport, the former City Airport, once hosted hundreds of thousands of flyers each year, back when Southwest Airlines operated from there.
